Annual Member's Meeting & Board Meeting

We will hold our annual Buckhead Baseball Members’ Meeting to elect the new Board of Directors on Monday, September 29, 2008, at 6:30 PM. We are still confirming the place and will send an email with the location separately, once confirmed. The annual Board meeting will follow.
The Nominating Committee is recommending the Board be fixed at 37 members for 2008-09. The 2008-09 Board nominees are listed in the attachment.
The Nominating Committee is putting forth John Geraghty as the nominee for President and Tim Goodwin as the nominee for President-Elect. John is a member of SunTrust’s management team and has served on the Buckhead Baseball Board of Directors, was both the 5 & 6 year old T-ball Leagues Commissioner, and served as President-Elect last year. John’s oldest boy, Jack, is a Buckhead Baseball alumnus, and his youngest, Will, is a Major League player. Tim is a partner at King & Spalding, has served on the Buckhead Baseball Board of Directors including as Secretary last year, and has coached several teams over the past few years. He has three sons in the program - Dylan, a rising Major League player; Will, a rising AAA player; and Harris, a rising A player. We have other Board members transitioning off and whose service is greatly appreciated by the entire Buckhead Baseball community.
A special note of thanks to Ray Baltz. Ray was brought in last year as President in a challenging environment and showed great leadership as Buckhead Baseball made a series of improvements in the best interests of our program. Ray will remain involved on the Board, but we all owe him our appreciation for his work over the last year.
All members of Buckhead Baseball are invited to attend and cast your vote for the Board. If you are unable to attend, an absentee ballot should have been emailed to you for you to complete and submit in accordance with the instructions set forth in the opening paragraph of the ballot. Absentee ballots must be received prior to the start of the meeting in order to be counted. If you have any questions or concerns about the ballot or procedures, please contact Tim Goodwin at: This e-mail address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it .
Finally, our Green Monster Capital Campaign is coming! This is vitally important to the health of our great Buckhead Baseball family, and when you are contacted, please give Buckhead Baseball your serious consideration - it is a great legacy for all of our children and for the children who will benefit for years to come.

Pace Academy presents:
Joe Ehrmann Community Lecture

Sunday, October 5th at Trinity Presbyterian Church at 7 p.m
The lecture is free of charge and open to the public.

Pace Academy is sponsoring a night with Joe Ehrmann at Trinity Presbyterian Church at 7 p.m on Sunday October 5th. Joe Ehrmann – former NFL football star, volunteer high school football coach and now an ordained minister – will speak regarding his message of Building Men and Women for Others. Michael Gibbs, Buckhead Baseball parent and Pace supporter provides the following great preview:

“Joe Ehrmann has been featured in “Parade Magazine” (8/29/04), which called him “The Most Important Coach in America.” He also is the subject of the New York Times bestseller, “Season of Life” by Pulitzer Prize winning author Jeffrey Marx (Simon and Schuster). A former All Pro professional football player for the Baltimore Colts, Joe is now the president of Building Men and Women for Others (BMWO), which seeks to promote positive models for men and women. BMWO recognizes the transformative power of sports to impact young people’s self-esteem and value-formation. Joe is the assistant football coach at The Gilman School in Baltimore, Maryland, one of the top ranked football programs in the country. Joe’s coaching philosophy inspires his high school athletes to “have a cause beyond themselves” and leads these young people to have a new perspective on responsibility and relationships. He has spent most of the past 20 years working on issues of poverty and racism in Baltimore, and is also involved with a number of organizations addressing child abuse and domestic violence. In addition, he is the co-founder of Baltimore’s Ronald McDonald House, and the founder of The Door, an inner-city, community-based ministry.”

Myrtle Beach Update #2

The teams hit the field today for the first game action...It was a hot blustery day today with the wind creating interesting experiences fielding pop-ups...also the field turf yeilds some crazy bounces...the entire field except for the mound and home plate area are field turf.

11U Red team split a double-header winning the morning game and losing the afternoon contest. They are 1-1 and have given up 8 runs going into day 3. (Chris -- please add more if you want)

12U Team played the Tinley Park Bulldogs from Illinois this afternoon and cruised to a 10-1 win scoring in every frame. Richard Jackson and Daniel Topping hit long homeruns in the victory. Mitchell Marino started and did not surrender a run through 3 innings and only threw 22 pitches total. Siegel, Topping and Williams all pitched an inning and only allowed 1 unearned run.

The dimensions of one of the fields that both teams played on today were 203 in left, 307 in center and 182 in right...it is a replica of the field the Boston Red Sox played on before in the early 1900's...its the site of the first World Series game ever played.

Go Buckhead!!

Myrtle Beach Update

Day 1 of the Beach Blast Tournament got off to damp start as rain threatened the opening ceremonies and Skills Competition. Both of our teams came away from the Skills Competition as winners of one of the 3 events.

Kyle Murphy slammed the competition by hitting 7 HRs deep into the swamp to take home the prize in the 12U Homerun Derby competition. (and he didn't use a big barrel bat like the competition did)

11U Red team won the 11U Bean Bob throwing competion in their division.

Both teams are in action today with the 11U playing a double header and the 12U playing one.

11U -- 10:15 vs River City Rockers from Indiana
11U -- 2:45 vs Carolina Forest Storm from South Carolina

12U -- 2:45 vs Tinley Park Bulldogs from Illinios

This week is the largest week ever for the Ripken Experience with 52 teams entered in 3 tournaments (13U, 12U, 11U).

LEATHER AND LUMBER

The 8-year old Buckhead Dodgers came out swinging the lumber and flashing the leather Saturday up in Acworth. The Dodgers went up 7-0 against the Bartow Americans in the first inning, let down in the middle innings, and then dug in deep to hold off the Americans and win 15-14. That put the Dodgers at 1-1 in pool play with a must win game Saturday night against the Oregon Park Grizzlies. OP opened up the game scoring 4 runs in the first and Buckhead answered with 4 of their own. The Dodgers then went up by 2 and held on for an inning before relinquishing the lead with some spotty defense. That was the end of that, though! Buckhead was down 11-8 going into the 5th inning when Scott Kirbo decided he needed to sacrifice bunt the runner at 1B over to 2B. (We had no signals for that, but, it worked) With two outs, the runner on 3B scored a big run to make it 11-9.

Kirbo, Drayton Foster, Robert Jordan, Walker Metzger, Ben O’Meara, Ryan Mazur and Max Withrow came up big defensively over the last 3 innings to hold the Grizzlies scoreless. Bottom of the 6th, down 2 runs in a must win situation, Mazur gets everything going with a base hit. Jordan follows with a soft fly to center to get on 1B, moving Mazur to 2B. Jay Sanders goes down swinging on a bad pitch by Coach Jordan. O’Meara hits a hard ball to leftcenter to score Mazur and put Jordan on 2B; 1 down. Foster hits into a fielders choice with O’Meara getting out at 2B. Hunt Sessler delivers a base hit to the right side of the field to score the tying run with both Foster and Sessler moving up to 3B and 2B respectively on a throwing error by the Grizzlies. 2 out, winning run on 3B – every kid’s dream in a must win situation and Brendan Gipson steps up to the plate. Big Brendan scorches a double hopper up the middle, Foster scores, game over. The Buckhead Dodgers win 12-11!

If anyone needs a reason to skip Sunday School and Church on Sunday morning, come on up to Acworth and cheer on the Buckhead Dodgers at 10:30 am Sunday morning as they face Acworth’s home team.

Buckhead 10s Win Shaw Park Tournament

The Buckhead 10 year-old All Star team won it all at the Larry Hutson Invitational Tournament at Shaw Park on Thursday night. Big Blue went undefeated -- outscoring opponents 55-16 in five games. They faced a tough Powder Springs team in the final. With the game tied 5-5 in the sixth, Buckhead plated three runs to take the lead. They shut it down in the bottom of the frame to win the championship 8-5.

Recycling Update from Buckhead Classic

Something to Feel Good About!

The report is in: Over 900 lbs of plastic and aluminum was recycled at the tournament this pastweekend. Thanks to everyone who kept their drink containers out of the
trash and out of the landfill. If EVERYONE would make use of the recycling
bins this coming weekend, we could easily reclaim over a ton of reusable plastic and aluminumby the end of the Buckhead Classic.
(Any plastic container marked with a 1 or 2 on the bottom is acceptable, as well as aluminum cans.)
Recycling saves energy and money.

Thanks for thinking!

Recycling Update

Thanks to Coca-Cola Recycling for Donating Recycling Bins !
You won't be able to miss the new red and white bins that will be in place just in time for the first pitch of the Buckhead Classic. Many thanks to Buckhead parent, Gene Rackley, and his colleague Neha Patel at Coke Recycling for getting us set up! These are temporary corrugated bins that will be emptied daily by Conex, also thanks to Coke. Please recycle your plastic bottles and cans as the volume collected will serve as a good blueprint for assessing our future recycling needs (and, if it rains, please feel free to put the bins under a shelter so they will last as long as possible.) Thanks for your interest and commitment in keeping Buckhead Baseball Clean and Green!

Keep Buckhead Green and Clean!

Many of you have suggested promoting and strengthening our recycling efforts at Frankie Allen. If there was ever a good time to improve our habits , it’s right now, before we play tournament host to teams from all over the state. So, I challenge everyone to make the effort to keep our many recyclables out of the trash cans and trash out of the recycle bins! Please look for the recycling containers at Frankie Allen, they are there, so let’s ALL use them. We all take pride in our beautiful new fields and grounds, so let’s make Buckhead baseball a shining example of not only good sportsmanship and hospitality, but also environmental responsibility. Please make a concerted and conscious effort to leave the stands, dugouts, play areas and parking lots with all trash and make sure that we no longer mix it in with our many recyclable bottles and cans. Most importantly, please make sure the kids get this message, as we want them to take the same pride in their ballpark as they do at school and at home.

Hello Team Parents!

As indicated in your Team Parent folders, Picture Day this year will be held for all teams on Saturday, April 19, with Sunday, April 20 reserved as a rain date. Pictures will be taken in the grassy area behind the new Majors Field. Your team and parent order forms were also enclosed with your team parent information in your folders.

Please find the schedule for Picture Day here. Once you've located your team's time slot, PLEASE WRITE THE TIME AND LOCATION (Station A, B, or C) for SATURDAY on each order form, and distribute one order form to each team family. I would recommend giving parents a week to ten days prior notice. Keep the Sunday schedule for your files. In case pictures are rained out, you will need to call team families and tell them of the time slot on Sunday, the 20th. NOTE: SUNDAY IS NOT A MAKE-UP DAY. THE PHOTOGRAPHER WILL NOT BE THERE UNLESS SATURDAY IS A RAIN OUT.

All players, managers and coaches, in full cap and uniform and with gloves, should arrive five-ten minutes prior to your scheduled time. Amazingly, Jo Hester keeps things running right on time or even a little early (she's been doing this for a long time!), so please honor the schedule. Every effort has been made to make time slots coincide with game and warm-up schedules, but please let your MANAGERS know about your team's scheduled time well ahead of April 19th to be sure he will be there and will remind players to be there. My apologies to those teams who do not have games on the 19th but have to come to the park anyway.

Please email me if you have questions, or call as a last resort!!

Many thanks,

Martha Payne
