Spring Season Overview

The Buckhead Baseball spring season offers programs for children between the ages of 4 and 12. Seven separate leagues enable children to play with peers of similar size and skill level, with the level of play increasing as they advance through the program. A summary of each of the six leagues is presented below:

4 Year Old T-Ball

The T4 league is designed as introduction to youth baseball, for parents as well as children.  Each team will play one day a week (Saturday or Sunday) for an hour.  The session will consist of 20 minutes of practice and a 40 minute game.  As with all Buckhead Baseball, the league will provide a hat, jersey, pants and socks.

Since the league is designed as an introduction to youth baseball, the league will host several coaching seminars on coaching youth baseball.  Topics will include: how to structure a practice and teaching proper mechanics of swinging, throwing, and fielding.

5 and 6 Year Old T-Ball

Teams are generally assigned by neighborhood. Each team has 14 players. Special requests for coaches and friends cannot always be honored due to the large number of participants in the program. You should expect to hear from your coach around the middle of February at which time practices will start. Until the season starts, most practices will be at Frankie Allen Park. After that, practices will be held at either Northside Baptist Church, Wieuca Road Baptist Church, Sutton Middle School or Margaret Mitchell School. Tee Ball practices and games are limited to 3 events per week. Games are played on weekends and on weekdays at 5:30. A schedule will be sent out once the teams are determined.

7 Year Old Rookie League

The Rookie league is intended to be a step up for children who played T-Ball in the previous 3 springs and are ready to challenge and advance their skills, as well experience a slightly more competitive environment as part of a team. Even though winning and losing is secondary to developing their baseball skills and having fun, score will be kept in each game. However, we do not keep records or standings in Rookie, and there are no playoffs. Instead of tees, batters will hit off of a generous amount of live pitches thrown by their coach at varying distances and speeds based on the coach’s understanding of his player’s relative skill level. The idea behind coach-pitch is to have batters become better accustomed to seeing the ball released from a ‘player’ (their coach) and making contact. As a result, coach-pitch should help increase the player’s hand-eye coordination—an essential skill for baseball and many other sports. Buckhead Baseball and its Rookie coaches do not lose sight of the fact that players are only seven years old and just beginning to really learn the fundamentals and strategy of baseball. Rookie teams are usually coached by volunteer ‘dad-coaches.’  In fact, our Rookie league actively seeks capable parents who wish to volunteer as coaches, and we encourage active participation by all parents throughout the season. Rookie league restricts the number of events (games and/or practices) to 2 per week.

8 Year Old A League

A league is for 8 year olds and it is coach pitch. There are 8 year old tryouts and an 8 year old draft. This is how teams are determined. While A league is more competitive than Rookie league - there are wins/losses, standings and playoffs - we balance the increased competition with skills development and a fun, exciting season that encourages kids to continue playing through our league's upper levels.  Games and practices take place on weekdays and weekends, with schedules (including times and field locations) distributed once players are drafted onto teams.

9 Year Old AA League

AA league is for 9 year olds and this is the first year of player pitch.  There are 9 year old tryouts and a 9 year old draft.  This is how teams are determined.  AA league is a competitive league, with wins/losses, standings and playoffs.  However, the players are taught to pitch, catch and hit at a higher level, so continued instruction and skills development are very important components of our AA league.  Games and practices take place on weekdays and weekends, with schedules (including times and field locations) distributed once players are drafted onto teams.

10, 11, and 12 Year Old AAA League

This League consists of 10, 11, and 12 year olds. Any 11 or 12 year old who is not drafted into the Majors will automatically be put into the AAA draft. If an 11 or 12 year old is not interested in playing in the Majors, he should contact the Player Agent when the tryout letters come out. 12 year olds are not allowed to pitch in the AAA league. Until the season starts, practices will be at Frankie Allen Park. After that, practices will be held at either Northside Baptist Church, Wieuca Road Baptist Church, Sutton Middle School or Margaret Mitchell School. Practices and games are limited to 4 events a week. Games are played on weekends and on weekdays at 5:30 and 7:30. A schedule will be sent out once the teams are determined.

11 and 12 Year Old Major League

All 11 and 12 year olds are eligible to try out for Majors.  To qualify for the Majors draft, a player must attend try outs. All 11's and 12's who are not drafted into the Majors will be included on a AAA team. If an 11 or 12 year old is not interested in playing in the Majors, he should contact the Player Agent when the tryout letters come out. There are 9 Majors teams with 11 players per team and each team is required to have at least (5) 12 year olds.  Games are played on weekends and on weekdays. A schedule will be sent out once the teams are determined. Majors practices will be held at Frankie Allen Park, Northside Baptist Church, North Atlanta High School Margaret Mitchell School. Practices and games are limited to 5 events a week.
