Fall Ball Coaches Need To Return Equipment

Since this weekend marks the end of the fall baseball season, we need to get all of the equipment back. Please take your equipment to the boardroom next to the concession stand following your game on Sunday. If it is locked, please just leave it outside. It is very important that we get everything back this Sunday, so we do not have to track you down and have you get it to me at a later date. Please return equipment even if you may have intentions of coaching again in the spring. Please clearly indicate on or in the bag your team name and league. We need to go through everything and replace and repair it so that everyone will have good stuff in the spring. Thanks for your cooperation and please feel free to contact Guy Fulwiler with any questions or comments.

Steve Arthur Coach, Mentor And Builder

1958 Northside Jaycees, Opening Day at Bagley Park

Steve Arthur is remembered by the Buckhead Nation for his contributions to youth baseball. Mr. Arthur passed away here in Atlanta on September 15th at the age of 88. He attended Woodward Academy (then called Georgia Military Academy) and loved baseball growing up. He played one season with the Atlanta Crackers before leaving to serve his country in World War 2 as an Army officer. He returned decorated with the Bronze Star and Purple Heart. After coming home, he was instrumental in the support and progress of youth baseball in our area. Mr. Arthur coached at Buckhead (Then Bagley Park) and went on to literally build fields at Chastain making a place for older boys to play. He is known for his devotion to coaching the game, mentoring the boys  and building the programs we enjoy today. Take the time to read the story of Mr. Arthur's contributions in the article written by his daughter, Dr. Linda Arthur, by following the link below. All of us who love the game owe him a debt of gratitude.

Buckhead History: 1995 Player Relives Great Moment.

Ricky Dimon of the Buckhead Baseball Champion Dodgers of 1995.

Ricky was reviewing the great sports memories of his 23 years and the write-up below was attached to his 22nd. He wrote on his web site:

"22. The number of wins the 1995 Buckhead Baseball Major Royals had heading into the playoffs. That’s 22 more than their number of losses. That’s right, 22-0 and hands down the most talented team in Buckhead history. We, the Dodgers, headed into that semifinal showdown with a meager 12-10 record. I can’t say that the Royals weren’t a team in the truest sense of the word; they probably were. But I know for sure we were. Most of the Dodgers had played together for 2 years, and most of us went to Westminster, courtesy of the drafting of my dad in the Major Draft two years earlier. That included me, Charlie Yates, Noble Stafford, David Fenton, the late Si Sitterson, Judson Wallace, and Rollins Luckey. Wallace, an all-Ivy League hoopster and now playing professionally in Germany, pitched the game of his life against the Royals and somehow we prevailed, 8-6. How we got to 8-6 is almost all a blur now, although I do know I reached base 5 times in 5 at bats, although I think at least one was via error. Either way, it was then and always will be both the biggest upset in Buckhead Baseball history and the greatest moment of my playing career." ~Ricky Dimon

Webmaster note: As many of you know, I am always looking for something from the history of Buckhead Baseball. I was surfing the web for things Buckhead when I found Ricky's web site. He was reviewing the great sports memories of his 23 years and the write-up above was attached to his 22nd. I thought it was perfect. He was kind enough to scan this picture and others for our web site. I will be placing this and his other pictures (one is Ricky with his Dad which is great) in Buckhead History soon. Check it out.

Bucks Fall 1 Game Short Of Second Fall Title

The Buckhead Bucks finished as the runner -up this past weekend in the West Cobb Classic held at Oregon Park in Ackworth. The Bucks defeated Cartersville Gold (4-1) and the BUMC Mudcats (11-6) on Saturday in pool play with outstanding pitching, defense and hitting. In a marathon Sunday elimination round, the Bucks defeated the ECB Astros in the morning opener, followed by a semi-final win against the Renegades, which had also been undefeated through the 8 team pool play. Throughout the tournament the Bucks bats were ringing against top pitching, but fell mysteriously silent in the Championship game… going down to the host team… Oregon Park Vipers 4-1 in 6 innings.

Steve Arthur, Youth Baseball Leader, Will Be Missed.

If you are a child or the parent of a child who played or is currently playing baseball at Buckhead or Chastain, you have a debt of gratitude to Steve Arthur. After serving in WWII and being awarded the Purple Heart for injuries during the conflict, Mr. Arthur returned to Atlanta and took a special interest in making sure that our children had a place to play baseball. Steve Arthur coached at Buckhead and was instrumental in the construction of the ball fields at Chastain. Mr. Arthur passed away Friday at age 88 at his home in Atlanta.

Thinking About Fall Ball?

1. When are tryouts? There are no tryouts. Teams are assigned and coaches will call you about your team assignments.

2. How many practices are there? There are usually two before games start. No practices once games start.

3. When do we play? Games are usually on Sunday. There may be a few on Saturday.

4. If I am playing football, what about a conflict? Fall Ball is a second sport. Conflicts will arise but let your coach know when you cannot be there and arrangements will be made.

5. What about rainouts? If you game is rained out, these games are not usually rescheduled.

6. Is score kept? Yes, score is kept on each individual game played if applicable to the league. Standings are not recorded and Tournaments are not played.

7. What are the goals of Fall Ball? Fun is the primary goal. Also, you can keep your baseball skills sharp. In addition, players can try new positions and get used to rule changes they will see in the upcoming spring season in their new league.

Conner McDaniel pitches a great game against a strong Warner Robins LL team in the State Semi-finals going 5. Alec Sard has the key hit (two RBI double) to put Buckhead ahead after trailing 2 to 1. Schultz closes the game for a 5 to 3 barnburner win for the Buckhead Boys. Everyone contributed to the victory with hits and great defensive plays.
